The destruction of Pūtanā

One day the demoness Pūtanā descended from outer space into Gokula, the home of Nanda Maharaja. Having been sent by the cruel King Kamsa to kill all the babies in the Vrndavana area, Pūtanā displayed her mystic power and assumed the disguise of a very beautiful woman. She boldly entered Kṛṣṇa's bedroom without permission, but everyone was so overwhelmed by her beauty that they did not protest. The baby Kṛṣṇa, who resembled a fire covered by ashes, looked upon Pūtanā and thought that He would have to kill her. Pūtanā could understand the great potency of Kṛṣṇa, but, enchanted by the influence of Kṛṣṇa's internal energy, she took Kṛṣṇa upon her lap anyway and offered Him her poison smeared breast to suck. Suddenly baby Kṛṣṇa became very angry at Pūtanā, and taking hold of her breast, He squeezed it very hard with both hands and began to suck out both poison and her life. In unbearable agony, Pūtanā perspired heavily, flailed her arms and legs wildly, and cried out, ...

Kṛṣṇa kills Tṛṇāvarta

A servant of King Kaḿsa, known as Tṛṇāvarta, as instructed by Kaḿsa, appeared there in the shape of a whirlwind. He picked up the child Kṛṣṇa on his shoulders and raised a great dust storm all over Vrindavan, covering everyone's eyes. The Tṛṇāvarta demon went high into the sky with baby Kṛṣṇa on his shoulder, but the baby assumed such a weight that suddenly he could not go any further, and he had to stop his whirlwind activities. Due to Kṛṣṇa's weight, Tṛṇāvarta considered him to be like a great mountain or a hunk of iron. But because Kṛṣṇa had caught the demon's neck, the demon was unable to throw Him off. He therefore thought of the child as wonderful, since he could neither bear the child nor cast aside the burden. With Kṛṣṇa grasping him by the throat, Tṛṇāvarta choked, unable even to make a sound or move his hands and legs. His eyes popping out, the demon lost his life and fell, along with the little boy, down to the ground of Vrndavana. While the gopīs wh...

Principles for a harmonious marriage

Across all religions there is a universal concept that when a man and woman marry with proper attitude they become one body. They don’t merge into each other’s existence, but it means that they start living for a common purpose – to serve God together. They share the same goal at many levels. First – I will do anything to protect you and you will do anything to protect me; this is oneness. We are there for each other and whatever the difficulties we may face, we will be faithful to each other, till death separates us. It means to give up one’s false ego for the sake of the other. It’s a two way street. So this faithfulness, this devotion to each other is the common principle of marriage. Secondly, we will tolerate any differences between us for the sake of giving the children the best possible upbringing. I may be angry as fire on you and you may be totally disgusted with me, but if the children are there, we will not express our anger. If they see their pa...
