From the platform of Shraddha to Prema

When asakti or deep attachment for Sri Shyamsundar intensifies greatly, it is called Bhava, which further progresses into Prem, unalloyed unprecedented, unrestrained, fathomless pure love which eternally flows in an uninterrupted stream like that of honey towards the object of love, Sri Sri Radha Shyamsundar. Reaching this platform, the sadhaka finds a moment's separation from the Lord like 12 years and the entire universe to be null and void in the absence of Govinda. This has been expressed by Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu in Sri Shikshashtakam, yugayitam nimeshena chakshusha pravrishayitam shunyayitam jagat sarvam govinda-virahena me O Govinda! Feeling Your separation, I am considering a moment to be like twelve years or more. Tears are flowing from my eyes like torrents of rain, and I am feeling all vacant in the world in Your absence. In this exalted stage, the sadhaka serves the Lord both internally and externally, as directed by Srila Rupa Goswami, ...

Appearance of Sri Ramanujacharya

Srila Ramanujacharya, the Acharya of Sri Sampradaya All glories to Srila Ramanujacharya, the Acharya of Sri Sampradaya, who defeated the atheistic adwaita philosophy of Shankaracharya and preached loving devotion to the lotus feet of the Supreme Lord. Born in Shriperumbudur in 1017 A.D. in the house of Asuri Keshava and Kantimati, Ramanuja was married at the age of 16 to Rakshakambal. Soon after marriage and the unexpected departure of his father from this world, Ramanuja moved to Kanchi with his family, where he started studying the adwaitavad philosophy under the guidance of Yadav Prakash. However, the impersonal and offensive explanations of Yadav greatly distressed the heart of Ramanuja, who was a pure devotee of the Lord. Once, when his teacher gave an offensive explanation of the eyes of Lord Vishnu, he was so deeply hurt that he disagreed with Yadav and corrected him. This greatly angered Yadav. When he continued to refute the mayavad philosophy, Yadav told him to leave hi...

Sunday Meditation: Why worship God when He is everywhere

Sri Udupi Krishna at Udupi Have you heard the classic argument ? God is everywhere, so there is no need to worship Him in a temple. But if He is everywhere then He is also in the temple. Once Devaki, the mother of Lord Krishna requested to Him as follows: "My dear Krishna, I have the honour of being glorified as your mother, but I never saw your sweet pastimes of growing up in Gokul. As soon as you were born you were taken away". Desiring to please His mother, Krishna immediately took the form of baby Gopal and allowed His mother to taste the divine sweetness of these lilas or pastimes. However, Rukmini, His queen saw this form and said, "My Lord, although I am your queen, I am very attracted to this form of baby Gopal. Could you please give me a deity so that I can worship Him to my heart's content"? Krishna gladly agreed. For centuries this form was later kept in a mound of Gopi-chandan. And it was this huge mound that was kept in a ship bound for ...

Nature reponds to your actions

During this time of corona outbreak and its subsequent consequences there are lots of questions. The question is within this overwhelming whirlwind of doubts, challenges and accusations, what is God doing? Why has He sent this Corona? Is He really compassionate? Or is nature more powerful than God? The Vedic scriptures give us some hints on how to understand God's involvement in such natural disasters. Let us see below how scriptures answer these questions. Srimad Bhagavatam 2.10.45 states "There is no direct engineering by the Lord for the creation and destruction of the material world. What is described in the Vedas about His direct interference is simply to counteract the idea that material nature is the creator." nāsya karmaṇi janmādau parasyānuvidhīyate kartṛtva-pratiṣedhārthaṁ māyayāropitaṁ hi tat In other words, the Supreme is not directly involved in the workings of the Material Nature (prakriti)  As Vedas explain, material nature (prakriti) is ope...

Kaḿsa threatens Devakī

Kaḿsa threatens Devakī As the newly married Vasudeva and Devakī(who would be Kṛṣṇa's parents in the future) prepared to start for home, conch shells, bugles, drums - kettledrums all vibrated in concert for their auspicious departure. But as Kaḿsa controlling the reins of the horses, drove the chariot along the way, an unembodied voice addressed him, "You foolish rascal, the eighth child of the woman you are carrying will kill you"! Therefore, upon hearing this omen from the sky, he caught hold of his cousin's hair with his left hand and took up his sword with his right hand to sever her head. Wanting to pacify Kaḿsa, the great soul Vasudeva spoke to him in the following words: "My dear Kaḿsa, you are the pride of your family, the Bhoja dynasty, and great heroes praise your qualities. How could such a qualified person as you kill a woman, your own cousin, especially on the occasion of her marriage? 0 great hero, one who takes birth is sure to die, for deat...

Glories of Papamocani Ekadasi

Today is Papamocani Ekadasi. Ekadasi is the dearest day of Lord Krishna. It falls on the eleventh day of the waning and waxing fortnight of every lunar month in the Hindu calendar. In ancient Vedic scriptures Lord Krishna informs that He grants unlimited spiritual credits to anyone who observes the Ekadasi fast.  How to observe Ekadasi ? One should refrain from eating grains and beans on this day. One can honor milk, fruits and other non-grain foodstuffs which are first offered to Lord Krishna. Such a fast pleases Krishna very much. One should also engage in some devotional service on this day. Please find below the detailed narration of Papamocani Ekadasi as mentioned in the scriptures. Yudhisthira Maharaja said, "0 Supreme Lord, I wish to hear about the Ekadasi that occurs during the dark fortnight of the month of Caitra [March- April]. What is its name, 0 Lord, and what results can one attain by observing it?" Lord Sri Krsna, replied, "0 best of kings, ...

The destruction of Pūtanā

One day the demoness Pūtanā descended from outer space into Gokula, the home of Nanda Maharaja. Having been sent by the cruel King Kamsa to kill all the babies in the Vrndavana area, Pūtanā displayed her mystic power and assumed the disguise of a very beautiful woman. She boldly entered Kṛṣṇa's bedroom without permission, but everyone was so overwhelmed by her beauty that they did not protest. The baby Kṛṣṇa, who resembled a fire covered by ashes, looked upon Pūtanā and thought that He would have to kill her. Pūtanā could understand the great potency of Kṛṣṇa, but, enchanted by the influence of Kṛṣṇa's internal energy, she took Kṛṣṇa upon her lap anyway and offered Him her poison smeared breast to suck. Suddenly baby Kṛṣṇa became very angry at Pūtanā, and taking hold of her breast, He squeezed it very hard with both hands and began to suck out both poison and her life. In unbearable agony, Pūtanā perspired heavily, flailed her arms and legs wildly, and cried out, ...

The bathing ceremony of Lord Kṛṣṇa

Nanda Mahārāja was naturally very magnanimous, and when Lord Sri Kṛṣṇa appeared as his son, he was overwhelmed with jubilation. Nanda Mahārāja gave two millions cows, fully decorated with cloth and jewels, in charity to the brahmanas, He also gave them seven hills of grain covered with jewels and with cloth decorated with golden embroidery. Vrajapura, the residence of Nanda Mahārāja, was fully decorated with various festoons and flags, and in various places there were gates made with varieties of flower garlands, pieces of cloth, and mango leaves. The courtyards, the great near the roads, and everything within the rooms of the houses were perfectly swept and washed with water. The cowherd men put on valuable ornaments and garments such as coats and turbans. Decorated in this way, and carrying various presentations in their hands, they approached the house of Nanda Mahārāja. The wives of the cowherd men were very pleased to hear that mother Yasoda had given birth to a so...

Kṛṣṇa kills Tṛṇāvarta

A servant of King Kaḿsa, known as Tṛṇāvarta, as instructed by Kaḿsa, appeared there in the shape of a whirlwind. He picked up the child Kṛṣṇa on his shoulders and raised a great dust storm all over Vrindavan, covering everyone's eyes. The Tṛṇāvarta demon went high into the sky with baby Kṛṣṇa on his shoulder, but the baby assumed such a weight that suddenly he could not go any further, and he had to stop his whirlwind activities. Due to Kṛṣṇa's weight, Tṛṇāvarta considered him to be like a great mountain or a hunk of iron. But because Kṛṣṇa had caught the demon's neck, the demon was unable to throw Him off. He therefore thought of the child as wonderful, since he could neither bear the child nor cast aside the burden. With Kṛṣṇa grasping him by the throat, Tṛṇāvarta choked, unable even to make a sound or move his hands and legs. His eyes popping out, the demon lost his life and fell, along with the little boy, down to the ground of Vrndavana. While the gopīs wh...

Principles for a harmonious marriage

Across all religions there is a universal concept that when a man and woman marry with proper attitude they become one body. They don’t merge into each other’s existence, but it means that they start living for a common purpose – to serve God together. They share the same goal at many levels. First – I will do anything to protect you and you will do anything to protect me; this is oneness. We are there for each other and whatever the difficulties we may face, we will be faithful to each other, till death separates us. It means to give up one’s false ego for the sake of the other. It’s a two way street. So this faithfulness, this devotion to each other is the common principle of marriage. Secondly, we will tolerate any differences between us for the sake of giving the children the best possible upbringing. I may be angry as fire on you and you may be totally disgusted with me, but if the children are there, we will not express our anger. If they see their pa...
